The first 3 stars are needed to unlock all of the 5 standard spells. If you have them already, this shouldn't be an issue. "for more points" is a weird error message.

Do you have enough credits to get the spell point to upgrade the spell?
The total number of points available to be used for spell upgrades is directly related to the general's level. If you get this message, you need to bump the general up a level to increase a spell level.Originally Posted by <UPU>Byzanttne
This relation is just equality. For each general level, you can have one point in skills. So a level 40 generals can have a total of 40 points in skills.The total number of points available to be used for spell upgrades is directly related to the general's level.
