I play Namida and Harker, and I am happy with them. Should I be spending gold on new characters, for any reason? I doubt I will play them.
If not, what should I spend gold on?

you should buy all the heroes 1st (except ones with diamonds only buy if u REALLY want them). no reason not to. after focus on learning how to build your rune page(s)
