Other than fulfilling orders for credits, what purpose do gladiators serve?

same purpose as priestess, lantern (now that air defense cost is low) and saboteur (only need at the most 10). Not very well thought out units compared to other games I am playing ?
Grunts are and elephants good because of the hits they can take.
Academy upgrades and the cost are way out of line ?

I always wonder that too. While they have high hit points they are some of the stupidest troops to choose from. They repeatedly hit walls instead of going through gaps that have already been made. I use them in my alliance castle (when I can get them) cause they take up less space than wizards meaning I can fit more of them for defense when attacked.
